Brown Thrasher seen by 6. Doc photo by Cindy Peters. Foote Park in riparian gulch below picnic table and big electric tower on side of hill downstream from #3 disc golf.
I agree, definitely pine siskin. Another helpful clue, they often travel with goldfinches, plus the warblers feed primarily on bugs and berries, so would not be eating seeds on the ground, instead feeding on insects in the air and in the trees etc. Great capture though, I have not seen any yet this year in the yard!
Thanks for the ID. They seemed to me to be too large for Pine Siskins and we haven’t had a Pine Siskin in the yard in at least two years. For further confirmation, we woke up to a bird bath full of Pine Siskins splashing water everywhere.
The small flock seems to have moved on. Hopefully, they will return.
I’m sorry to hear that the American Goldfinches are ignoring your feeders. I’ve counted ten at a time on my tube and 2 tray feeders. Today I left for my bike ride with 9 sightings: AMGO, LEGO, PISI, MODO, BCHU, SOSP, RBNU, BCCH, and HOFI.
Plus, there was a mystery bird that I was unable to find in Sibley. Small, tan, lightly striped and too quick to photograph.
Unfortunately, Osprey and other raptors have become harder to come by along the greenbelt, and the water birds have not really arrived yet. This happens every year, but I’d rather have 30+ birds (my usual count) but 28 will have to do.
