Re: Hoary Redpoll Report / Pocatello

We found at least one Hoary Redpoll on the east side of Pocatello in a flock of about 40 Common Redpolls. There could be more Hoarys in there, they were moving quite a bit and it was quite windy making identification and photographing difficult. Location is along Meadows Road off of Pocatello Creek Rd, in the trees along the creek as well as along the road edge in the gravel. The road is dirt and about 2 miles in length, birds were seen twice today, up towards road’s end and then down closer to the pavement.
Also about 30+ Cedar Waxwings up there.

Unusual finch

Just took these pictures in our yard. Had to shoot through the window, so they are rather fuzzy.  Appears to be a female house finch, but I have never seen this white head before. We saw it 3-4 days ago, but
it immediately took off and haven’t seen it until this afternoon.

We had 3-4 Pine Siskin a week ago, but they were gone within an hour and have not returned. When we lived in the North End, we had the Pine Siskins regularly, but they don’t seem to like the West Bench. Probably
not enough trees.

Thanks for any ideas about this house finch.
