Tinnitus is my old challenge ⦠started in 1965 when I shot out my high frequency hearing in 3 days. The audiologists have told me I have learned to āhear around itā to a degree and the new hearing aids have helped some also.

Ken, I forgot about my other “new” challenge re birding by ear…. tinnitus is screaming at me, usually worse in afternoons
without Missy’s ears, I’d experience fewer (if any) waxwings, creepers, and Golden-crowned Kinglets
Heidi can vouch for this……..

The background noise is still and issue but at least with my new hearing aides I can hear a Song Sparrow for the first time since 1965.
My biggest challenge is trying to figure out what that new sound is, somebodies loud car radio a half mile away or a bird š

Because Treasure Valley has so much ambient noise⦠birding by ear is too much of a challenge, and/or maybe I need those hearing aids that allow you to tune in birds and tune out noise (traffic, aircraft, yada, yada, yada).
eh?
I grew up (in retirement) doing bird and vegetation transects for Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory in *remote* areas of N Arizona and W Colorado (shhh, please, theyāre still best kept secrets I think), where I could actually Hear the Birds! Little did I know how fast that particular ten years would fly by, nor did I fully appreciate these three basic necessities for birding⦠decent eyes, ears, brain.
So, where exactly is that fountain of youth, and does Medicare cover it? Please send GPS coordinatesā¦ā¦.
Happy November birding, folks!

I fit in some birding while traveling from Moscow to Coeur d’Alene, Saturday. At Lake Chatcolet in Heyburn State Park I had one RED-THROATED LOON with 3 PACIFIC LOONS, a late American White Pelican, and a Eurasian Wigeon. A SWAMP SPARROW was calling near the nearby Plummer Marsh Boardwalk. On Harlow Point Road alongside Harrison Slough, at the CDA River delta I had a very late COMMON YELLOWTHROAT (only the second November record in eBird for Idaho) and a N. Pygmy-owl.
Good Birding,
