[IBLE] Blue Jays and more

We’ve had four Blue Jays visiting the feeders and generally just hanging out for about three weeks. Once in a while a fifth joins them. In the last week, we’ve had 2-3 Steller’s…occasional at first, but now regulars. A surprise invasion was staged by a covey of fifteen California Quail last Thursday. They have been back every day since then to clean up under the platform feeder. Also, new to the yard, a RB Nuthatch has put us on frequent rounds.

Re: [IBLE] Blue Jay east of Rigby

We also had at least 1 Blue Jay in this same neighborhood most of last winter.

In addition to usuals, I have red breasted nuthatches, several mountain chickadees (I think they breed here) and a few (mercifully) Evening Grosbeaks, but in the past after several Blue Jays and a Rose Breasted GB one year, I want a Cardinal! Maps seem to say closest is over 500 miles away.

– Comments: “Continuing at 1398 9th st. Exn (9th and Christian Ridge rd./ 40.603935,-124.157321). There are several feeders around the neighborhood which the BLJA appears to be visiting. First heard up at Neil Palmer’s house who was also the original finder of this bird. It would give a distinct “jeer” call which made it easy to locate when it moved into the dense foliage or into neighbor’s yards. No obvious features or behavior that indicate possible captive rearing/escapee.”
