Re: Hoary Redpoll Report / Pocatello

I should have posted it here as well as Facebook! Earlier this week it was on the Gibson Jack trail in south Pocatello with a flock of Common Redpolls. It looks like a solid Hoary from the photos. A couple local birders spotted it! I am looking around today a little and maybe this weekend without high expectations, but fingers crossed it likes the creek along the trail where it was first seen.

In addition to other points already made your photo shows the
rufous edged rump and crown feathers and orangish eyebrow typical
of Rufous Hummingbird.

I tried to figure out the ID by comparing various online photos of immature/female Rufous Hummingbirds, but it seemed like all of those photos showed a concentrated spot of spangles in the center of the throat. The bird in my photo doesn’t have that spot, and that’s why I wasn’t sure about the ID.

White Gull at Deer Flat NWR lower dam (lake Lowell)

Sean Cozart has spotted a white gull with no dark feathers. He says he originally saw it from the dam near the park. He has also seen it from parking lot 7. It’s been seen in the water and flying. Gull was seen about 1/2 to a mile out.

Sean thinks it might be a Ross’s gull. Several birders are looking; if you happen to come to the lake please keep an eye out for it.
