We are at the Huntington Aparments Mallard and Parkcenter area. We just finished dinner and I watched our 3 feeders (2 squirrel caged tube feeders with no mess blend from Wild Birds Unlimited and one tube thistle feeder) and the deck under them and grass off the deck.
At one point there were at least 50 Lesser Goldfinches in view at once. I saw 1 American Gold finch. We had 1 Pine Siskin feeding on the deck, for some reason this season I have never seen more than one at a time. We had about a dozen House Finches, 1 (no stripes on breast or belly) male Cassin’s Finch, 2 Red-breasted Nuthatches coming and going. One Black-capped Chickadee, about a dozen Dark-eyed Junco’s, 4 Mourning Doves, one House Sparrow (frequently a whole lot more).

Years ago, RL guided me to a neighborhood out Warm Springs near the high bridge to see Lesser Goldfinches—a life bird for me. A few years after that, I started seeing them in more places. It wasn’t long before I had my own flock in my back yard. I would estimate that at least 20 different LEGO’s come to my feeders on a daily basis. They are joined currently by more than 20 Pine Siskins, a bird that never made an appearance last winter.
Of course, all of them are currently hiding from the Cooper’s Hawk that’s been perched on the wires out back for the last half hour or so. 😉

I take it Lesser Goldfinches not unusual anymore? I’ve had a small flock of them during the last couple of weeks.

Reflecting on Bewick’s Wren in the Boise area, a look back to the checklist for Birds of Southwest Idaho from the early 1980s compiled by BSU’s Daniel Stephens and Timothy Reynolds, and sponsored by Golden Eagle Audubon – rated it as a “6”, vagrant or hypothetical, less than three records for SW Idaho.
My other two favorite range expansion stories I’ve witnessed are Anna’s Hummingbird and Lesser Goldfinch – on 1980s checklist, both are rated “5”, rare, 3-10 total records for SW Idaho (3 verified).

I hear, and sometimes see, Bewick’s along the greenbelt from Esther Simplot to Les Bois racetrack. The ones I only encounter in winter are the Pacific Wrens.
BTW, got to see a red fox today along the boundary between the greenbelt and Veterans Park. Way cool.

Well, I did not realize that. Live and learn!

Hi Birders,
Yes, we saw him again today, having not really been looking much last few days.
Come by and have a look whenever you like. He seems to be most active late morning, early afternoon.
Best viewed from near the corner of Pinehurst Dr & 36th St.
