Posts to the IBLE group are not moderated but should follow these general guidelines. Please read the prohibition below the guidelines.

1) All messages are to be signed by the poster, using his/her real name.
Along with the name, it is considered good practice to also show your e-mail
address, and city from which you post.

2) Messages reporting sightings, should also provide at least minimal
information as to where the sighting took place, i.e., State, County,
City/Town. Major birding destinations such as Deer Flat NWR, Minidoka NWR,
American Falls Reservoir, etc. may be adequate in some situations. However,
if the sighting is expected to generate interest sufficient to have other
birders travel to view the bird, more detailed directions should be provided,
or the name and contact info for someone willing to supply such directions on
request.

3) Messages concerning caged birds, feral cats, etc. are strongly discouraged.

4) Messages conveying derogatory statements about any other person, a person’s
occupation or motives are strictly forbidden, and will be cause for one’s
membership to be suspended or even terminated for severe or repeated offenses.

5) It is permissible to post digital images to the list, but not more than
1 or 2 at a time and not in excess of 300K total. More extensive collections should be posted to the “Photos” section of the IBLE website. Contact the listowner, if you need more details.

PROHIBITED
Posting of directions to the location of any owl nest is not permitted. In addition photos of owls at a nest are not permitted on IBLE. Failure to follow this rule will result in loss of posting privileges. No Exceptions.

CDA LONG-TAILED DUCKS

The 2 Long-tailed Ducks continued at North Idaho College Beach In Coeur d’ Alene, this morning.  They were tucked back in Cougar Bay, southwest of Cedars Floating Restaurant, and then moved out among the pylons further to the east.  A scope is probably required.  Two Red-breasted Mergansers were nearby.

Peanut Butter Stuff (PBS)

 

Melt together 1/2 cup lard and 1/2 cup chunky peanut butter (microwave), then add stuff in approximate amounts:

lately I’ve been starting with a commercial suet cake and adding chunky PB (magic stuff)

 

1 cup corn meal

1 cup oatmeal (I use 5-seed “bulk” from WinCo)

1/2 cup flour (whatever’s on hand, prefer whole grain or whole wheat)

1/4 cup sugar

1/2 cup chopped nuts, e.g., almonds, walnuts, pnuts, sunseed, again whatever’s on hand

 

Combine melted and dry ingredients and mix well, might take a bit more microwaving.

 

Can be made into suet cakes (for wire cages) or stuffed into holes in a suet log (good for defeating starlings, but magpies aren’t fooled very long, haha)

Re: migration and irruption

IBLE, with cc’s to people otherwise unable to receive ~~~~~ ?

I don’t remember responding to Carl’s note below…….  maybe yes in my dreams?

Carl provides excellent discussion, and I’ve gotta say that migration in all of its “formats” has long been one of my topmost two or three favorite subjects regarding birds, and Peter Berthold’s “General Survey” (2001, maybe since updated?) (Oxford Ornithology Series) has been one of my favorite references on topic.  I can offer only conjectures, e.g., that “irruptive species” utilize irruption as a precondition to range expansion in a manner similar to “vagrant species” that are doing the same thing but at a slower pace.  As an example, some warbler species tend to wander out of their expected ranges much more often than others do, and looking back at state-level CBC data I can see that ECDO are expanding northward way faster than WWDO, yada yada et yada.  I’ve often thought of out-of-range birds as genetic outliers that are necessary for a given species’ adaptive survival in a universe that is continually changing, whether they be considered as “typical migrants” or not.  And I’ve not often considered “irruption” to be a black-and-white phenomenon for this or that species, vs. not for other species where it is much more subtle.  Does this make sense?  Seems to me there is a “spectrum” of “irruption” with some species being far less obvious at it than others…?

Maybe somebody can provide clarity, or reference to published data re “migration and propensity toward irruption” as it might relate to genetic variability.  But I can’t imagine what such “data” might look like.

life beyond suet… ??

It’s 31F here in W Boise, overcast, calm, and good-sized snowflakes have been drifting downward, lazily, much of the afternoon, Cooper’s Hawk has visited our backyard bird feeding station a couple times, presumably to maintain order and heightened vigilance, geese are huddled together across the street, mallards and wood ducks are snooping around under the crabapple trees, and impish feathered beasties have been constantly working my caged PBS suet (loose recipe attached)… including chickadees, nuthatches, kinglets, juncos, woodpeckers, sparrows.  There’s been a nonstop parade to/from the suet, so I can’t help but wonder… what would these ‘lil squirts be doing without my suet offering?

Thank you for your efforts and for finding what you think will be a suitable replacement for IBLE. I do enjoy reading the reports and anecdotes from around the state. When people tell the tale of their bird sightings, it is more interesting to me than a posting of species, place, and time. Backyard tales can be just as attention-getting as stories from the field. So keep those stories coming.
