I’m a little rusty on sapsuckers, but the additional photos help rule out a
pure yellow-bellied because, in addition to the extensive red on the nape,
the white/creamy barring on the back is arranged into 2 neat rows divided
by a distinct black stripe, whereas a yellow-bellied would show broader
white (or golden) barring all the way down the back, not strongly arranged
in 2 narrow and separate rows.

The better-lit photos from RL (is it definitely the same individual?) make
me wonder if we can even rule out a pure red-naped. Jason’s original photo
looked like the bird has a thick and complete black border all the way
around the red throat patch, but on RL’s photos you can see that there is
extensive bleeding of red into the black border, such that it no longer
looks particularly complete.

Interesting bird and a great find for CBC week (and hopefully refound
tomorrow), regardless.

Walk around the main pond and by the buildings at Eagle Island State Park for Evening Grosbeaks and Bohemian Waxwing

I’m seeing lots of Bohemian Waxing in several places, especially in the Eagle area.

Hello All,

Ann Swanson helped me find the Red-Naped Sapsucker at Morris Hill today, at lunchtime. It was seen in a large spruce on the border between sections A & B towards the north end of the cemetery (near her previous sighting in November) but took off to the east shortly after the sighting. I checked the pines on the east side but couldn’t relocate it. Surely it’ll be around this winter for more to see. Perhaps it’s cousin the Red-breasted will return, too.
Anyway, thanks Ann for putting me on to the bird, and I hope this helps out this year’s CBC!

RL Rowland called and asked if I’d let people know that there is a Varied Thrush and Western Screech Owl currently being seen at Kathryn Albertson Park near downtown Boise. Great birds for the first day of the Boise CBC week!

There are some very dark Snow Geese at the Deer Flat NWR lower dam this morning.

I knew the day would be great when a Sharp-shinned Hawk visited our yard
first thing. And things only got better when I found a Cooper’s Hawk just a
few blocks south of State St. And of course the immature Bald Eagle that
flew by as I went under Main St. kept things going. But he seemed to want to
make sure I saw him, so he came around and perched on a large pine tree next
to the Fairview Ave. bridge. (Later I saw an adult as well.)

And while an A. Kestrel isn’t rare, they’ve become harder to find, so when I
saw one by the trestle it was also a treat. Then, on the edge of Ann
Morrison Park, while Susan and I were watching a perched Great Blue Heron, 2
Red-tailed Hawks came and landed in a fir tree up the hill from the heron. A
five raptor day and frost bite hadn’t set in yet!

But the crème de la crème was an Osprey up in a tree, eating a fish, just
east of 50th St. on the Garden City side. A six raptor day and I was only
partially frozen. 😉

Then, while writing down my day list from memory, a Brown Creeper climbed
(crept?) up our backyard maple, and I had a 40 bird day. Too bad count week
doesn’t start until tomorrow.
