I took a hike near Hotel Creek in Island Park this afternoon and finally got to see a Pileated Woodpecker. I first became aware of it when I heard it hammering on a tree. It sounded much like a Hairy Woodpecker only the raps were several seconds apart. I’ve never heard anything like that so I walked over near it and watched it fly to another nearby tree. There have been occasional reports from the Centennial Mountains over the years but I’ve never succeeded in tracking one down. After seeing it I noticed the base of several dead Douglas Firs had large holes drilled into them. They were also riddled with ant tunnels which I’m sure is what the woodpeckers are after.Cliff
