Re: Northern Mockingbird near Barber Dam in Boise

Had a question about parking for this bird so I figured I’d just reply to the whole group. 
There’s parking either along E Sawmill Way (drive until you get to the entrance to a wide path heading towards the dam) or at a pullout along Eckert Rd, just north of the bridge. If you just want the mockingbird, Sawmill is quicker, but I had the White-throated Sparrow between the mockingbird spot and Eckert. 
Good luck to anyone who looks for it! Updates would be appreciated. 🙂

Northern Mockingbird near Barber Dam in Boise

I just found a Northern Mocking in Boise, along the Boise River just below Barber Dam. It was initially seen on the north side of the river and the large island (accessible right now with low water levels) below the dam, then flew across the island and landed on the south side of the river, just across the river from these coordinates: 43.56141° N, 116.12529° W
There were also three Common Redpolls in the same area on the big island, and a White-throated Sparrow closer to Eckert Bridge on the north side of the trail, in a pile of large logs, here: 43.562683, -116.128951

Watch out for Salmonellosis outbreaks… Washington and Oregon are already reporting outbreaks to winter on large scales.

I’m kind of late to the conversation here, so I hope this helps. I’m in college earning a degree for fisheries and wildlife management, and I actually wrote a research paper on bird feeders and whether or not to use them during the Winter – the general findings in this area are that it is supplemental, helpful, and doesn’t cause any real harm to the birds! 🙂 So long as the feeders/hulls are regularly cleaned up! Anyway, I saw there were some questions about that, and though I’m far from an expert (truly, I’m a student so I’m learning), I thought I’d share what I know 😀

Thanks, RL. I wasn’t going to take the heated feeder down this year. My goodness, no. I was Just wondering about having one long-term, year-after-year. Wondering about the science behind it and whether or not I am doing more harm than good by having one up in the winter. 

As for the seed, I live in the North End. Thanks for your recommendations and your thoughts.

Keep that heated hummer feeder out and lit. The little critter has decided to winter over in SE Boise this year and is here for the duration of the season regardless of what you or I may do. I have an acquaintance over in the Pierce Park area who, when he found he had an Anna’s, went out and bought a heated feeder. The bird now uses it a place to help stay warm at times. Reminds me, I need to call him to see how he’s getting on  on his with his bird.
For other seed requirements, have you tried Zamzow’s up on Federal Way/Bergeson? Assuming you live in SE Boise it’s closer than the Overland D&B.
