I have a bunch of the books mentioned by others, and I’ve read some of the ones I don’t have. I’d have to say Birding on Borrowed Time and Kingbird Highway are my favorites. I read the Phoebe Snetsinger book while I was going through chemo, so it had a real impact on me. And Kenn Kaufmann’s wanderings around the country included a trip to Yosemite at a time I was living there (and wearing the very fashionable Army field jacket—like Kenn).
One that hasn’t been mentioned so far is To See Every Bird on Earth, by Dan Koeppel. It’s a story by a son about his father’s obsession with birds. (Not that any of us can relate to obsession.)
BTW, I started with the Peterson’s Field Guide to the Birds, Eastern, in 1970. I now have a 3 shelf bookcase that is filled, plus a pile on the floor in front of it.
Almost forgot: John James Audubon, The Making of an American, by Richard Rhodes, is an excellent read that gave me new insight into why Audubon and his paintings were ground-breaking in their time—and still timeless.

I’m talking about Lane Guides, field guides, atlases for western states and provinces, as well as binders of data collected and analyzed and reanalyzed AND graphed……… 2 yrs in the UK, 2 yrs in Germany, 2 yrs in New Mexico, several yrs in Nevada, several yrs in Utah, 1 yr in Alaska, 3 yrs in New Mexico, 15 yrs in Colorado, 6 yrs here in Boise ID, yada yada…….et yada!
