The Moon Bird – about Red Knots – migration, conservation. Called
Juvenile non-fiction in some libraries for some reason.

Last of the Curlews – old book, sad and terrific about extinction. A
real classic.

Golden Guide to Birds of North America – ancient, but those SONOGRAMS!

And for books in the field today, I keep both Nat Geo and new Big Sibley
in the car. Each new edition of Nat Geo comes out as my current one is
worn out and falling apart from loving use. A ragged Delorme is always
in the car, one for which ever state I am in. Birders go where there is
no cell coverage, so navigation apps can be useless!

Which brings me to MAPS.ME which is not a book, but a free app for your
phone. It works without cell coverage, off global positioning, but you
download areas in advance of trying to use it. You can find trailheads,
forest roads, bike paths, etc in addition to freeways, motels, gas
stations, cities, all countries, all continents. Saved a friend lost in
the forest when she lost her trail and could have been out all night in
freezing temps.
