G’morning birders,

We’ve tried just about everything to prevent window strikes by our feeder
birds, but when an accipiter storms the back yard, the smallish frenzied
birds go every which way, slamming into each other and into windows. I’d
say that 80% of them recover and soon toodle off to one of our brush piles
or other dense cover. Yesterday’s casualty was a siskin that didn’t
recover, so I parked it on the magpie peanut tray. It was soon recycled by
one of our 25 magpies.

Our typical daily count from our yard (Big Sit! idea) has been about 20 sp,
in part because we have a duck pond across the street and mature cottonwoods
in view from our back yard that offer good views for raptors. GH Owls are
counter-calling as I write this…
