With all the talk of Rufous Hummers being the first to leave, I was quite
surprised yesterday when an adult female (with the ruby “brooch” at her
throat) showed up at my feeder and checked out just about every flower in
the yard. She was followed a little while later by an immature
Black-chinned, and then a Calliope showed up in the evening. The latter two
were here again today, but I have yet to see a Rufous today.

BTW, I was going through some old National Geo’s and found an article on
Hummers in the July 2017 issue. Some interesting facts, including that Nazi
Germany studied them in the 30’s when they were trying to develop a
helicopter. The rest of the fact-filled article is much more fun. 😉
