Welcome to the City of Calgary and Nature Calgary Bird Alert. This Bird
Alert was recorded on Thursday, August
17…………………………………….Alberta’s 2nd. CRESTED CARACARA
may be a one-day wonder. The bird was discovered at the Highway 69 and Range
Road 80A junction near Fort McMurray on July 29, but, there have been no
further reports……….The Calgary area’s 2nd. RED-HEADED WOODPECKER of
the year has been reported; Maureen Hills-Urbat reported the bird at her
home northwest of Cochrane on Saturday, August 5. Two other observers made
the trip to her home to see the bird………….There has been another
GREAT EGRET report in southern Alberta; Vince Piotrowski and Sandra Mills
found a bird near Red Deer on Saturday, August 12; that makes up to 7 of the
birds that have been reported in southern Alberta this
year……………………….Gord Smith found a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD near
Medecine Hat on Monday, August 14; that is the only report of that species
in the province thus far this year………………………….Caroline
Lambert found a juvenile RED PHALAROPE in the Irricana Sloughs on Friday,
August 11. She found the bird in one of her photographs; it was on the
slough on Range Road 264 just south of Township Road 264. Others journeyed
to the site to see the bird, but, it was not refound…………………Ken
Orich, David Scott, and, Luis Villaril reported 2 SNOW GEESE at Tyrrell Lake
south of Lethbridge on Sunday, August 13; these birds are out-of-season
there, but, this is a repeat performance from last
year……………………….Two Hudsonian Godwits were seen at a slough
on Range Road 264 south of Township Road 264 on Monday, August 14, while
Terry Korolyk observed a juvenile Western Sandpiper on Wednesday, August 9
on Range Road 284 just south of Township Road 231A southeast of Shepard. On
Sunday, August 13, Terry saw another Western Sandpiper; this time on 304
Street south of Highway 552 southeast of Carseland. On Tuesday, August 15,
Terry and Tony Timmons observed 420 Stilt Sandpipers on 304 Street south of
Highway 552. Dominic Mitchell found a breeding-plumaged Dunlin at Weed
Lake at Langdon on Sunday, July 30. Caroline Lambert found a winter-plumaged
Dunlin on Range Road 264 south of Twp. Rd. 264 southeast of Irricana on
Friday, August 11, while, Rick Robb photographed an adult Herring Gull at
Rotary Park in southeast Calgary on Monday, August 7. This species is
reaching annual status in the Calgary area in the Summer
months………….A Rufous Hummingbird wandered to Red Deer on Sunday,
August 13 where it was seen by Barb Clement…….Unusual in the Summer
months, a Northern Saw Whet Owl was reported by David Grinevitch on Rolling
Acres Drive in northwest Calgary on Saturday, August 12……………John
Bargman and Ena Spalding reported a Philadelphia Vireo in Springbank in west
Calgary on Monday, August 14, while Terry Korolyk and Tony Timmons watched a
male Canada Warbler at Wyndham-Carseland PP on Tuesday, August
15……………Barb Castell has had up to 4 BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS at her
home southeast of Priddis while Bruno Canadien thinks he may have observed
one at Beaverwood Flats in Black Diamond. Kent Ladell reported one in
Millarville southwest of Calgary on Tuesday, August 15. Andrew Slater found
a Black-and-White Warbler at Mallard Point in east Fish Creek PP on
Wednesday, August 16. Agnes Toth photographed a 1st. Fall male Cape May
Warbler at her home on Friday, August 4, while Sean Wade reported one at
Carburn Park in Calgary on Sunday, August 13. Deanna Desramaux reported 3
Hermit Thrush at the Saskatoon Farm south of Calgary on Thursday, August
10; these would be early
