Just a quick reminder as we head towards the first weekend of Christmas Bird Counts (CBCs) that any species observed within the count circle 3 days before or after count day – but not observed on count day – can still be counted as a “count week” species (in short, we know that species is in the count area at the right time, we just didn’t luck into it on count day). Thus, if time allows, it’s definitely worth doing some pre-CBC scouting and/or some post-CBC birding.
As an example, among many others the Boise CBC (map link here: Christmas Bird Count Circles – Intermountain Bird Observatory) is this coming Saturday, Dec 16. Thus, count week starts on Wednesday the 13th and ends on Tuesday the 19th. A couple examples of count week species worth searching for Wed-Fri are the Red-naped Sapsucker (+ another call-only sapsucker heard by Jason) present recently at Dry Creek cemetery – since sapsuckers can be pretty sneaky & might be missed on count day – and a variety of gull species that frequent the landfills but each visit can produce a different mix.
