[IBLE] A Six Raptor Day

I knew the day would be great when a Sharp-shinned Hawk visited our yard
first thing. And things only got better when I found a Cooper’s Hawk just a
few blocks south of State St. And of course the immature Bald Eagle that
flew by as I went under Main St. kept things going. But he seemed to want to
make sure I saw him, so he came around and perched on a large pine tree next
to the Fairview Ave. bridge. (Later I saw an adult as well.)

And while an A. Kestrel isn’t rare, they’ve become harder to find, so when I
saw one by the trestle it was also a treat. Then, on the edge of Ann
Morrison Park, while Susan and I were watching a perched Great Blue Heron, 2
Red-tailed Hawks came and landed in a fir tree up the hill from the heron. A
five raptor day and frost bite hadn’t set in yet!

But the crème de la crème was an Osprey up in a tree, eating a fish, just
east of 50th St. on the Garden City side. A six raptor day and I was only
partially frozen. 😉

Then, while writing down my day list from memory, a Brown Creeper climbed
(crept?) up our backyard maple, and I had a 40 bird day. Too bad count week
doesn’t start until tomorrow.

[IBLE] "count week" for Saturday CBCs starts Wednesday

Just a quick reminder as we head towards the first weekend of Christmas Bird Counts (CBCs) that any species observed within the count circle 3 days before or after count day – but not observed on count day – can still be counted as a “count week” species (in short, we know that species is in the count area at the right time, we just didn’t luck into it on count day).  Thus, if time allows, it’s definitely worth doing some pre-CBC scouting and/or some post-CBC birding.
As an example, among many others the Boise CBC (map link here: Christmas Bird Count Circles – Intermountain Bird Observatory) is this coming Saturday, Dec 16.  Thus, count week starts on Wednesday the 13th and ends on Tuesday the 19th.  A couple examples of count week species worth searching for Wed-Fri are the Red-naped Sapsucker (+ another call-only sapsucker heard by Jason) present recently at Dry Creek cemetery – since sapsuckers can be pretty sneaky & might be missed on count day – and a variety of gull species that frequent the landfills but each visit can produce a different mix.

[IBLE] FW: [obol] Anna’s hummingbird visits for the night! [1 Attachment]

Humbirders, just for fun…

I’ve seen a zillion hummers, have had one hit my feeders in the dark, have seen them with deformed/stretched 2x bills, have found them caught in spider webs (still hot and sassy) that I’ve set free, found an adult male Rufous, cussing, in the grass too full of sugar-water to fly (that one was an easy rescue), but I have yet to find one in torpor. Her photo opens sideways on my monitor, but you get the idea…

Hummers Rock!!!

Subject: [obol] Anna’s hummingbird visits for the night!

I’ve never seen a sleeping hummingbird… but last night when my husband was coming in from locking the chickens up, he noticed this small fluff ball attached to a jasmine vine that had crept over our patio, about 4 feet off the ground.

The hummingbird started out right- side up, and we figured he was in torpor and went inside to do a little research. Evidently they wind up upside down when they’re sleeping (which this guy obviously did) and are so dead to the world that you could pick them up (which we did not attempt) but thought we could take a few photos. He was still there just before 7 this morning, but is now fighting with at least one other guy over breakfast.

Cheers,

Zia Fukuda

Re: [IBLE] Digest Number 6097

The observation was originally entered on the checklist as
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker by mistake. That’s what triggered the Alert
from eBird. The observer has now changed the entry to Red-naped
Sapsucker but it was originally entered as Yellow-bellied. Not sure if
the comment about looking for YBSA was on the checklist but the filters
don’t take comments into account. Anyone can enter any species in a
checklist and trigger an Alert. If the alert doesn’t include CONFIRMED
(like the Snow Goose on the same alert as the YB Sapsucker – I’ll copy
it in below) after the species name and count the record hasn’t been
reviewed yet. All kinds of data entry errors occur and sometimes a user
just makes a mistaken identification. This is something to keep in mind
when using eBird Alerts. The idea is to get the word out promptly to
facilitate chasing of rarities but that necessarily means these errors
will be sent out as alerts before they have been reviewed. It’s a trade
off for getting the info quickly. Hope this helps clear up the confusion.

RE: [IBLE] Large mixed flock of birds this morning

Thank you, Jonathan.

Your note ignited my curiosity to go snooping around in eBird, where I see
that the most siskins recorded in a single eBird entry in Idaho is of 385
birds, by Terry Gray on 24 Feb 2012. Knowing Terry, I’m guessing he
probably counted them on photos he took of that event? =)

His entry here: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S10000562

Just for fun, I think the most siskins I’ve seen at one time was at Oregon
Dunes NRA two months ago, when a few hundred (best estimate) funneled down
from the sky into trees all around me, which set off a couple of Wrentits
into impressively loud, un-choreographed wailing! This in turn reminds me
of a time 15 yrs ago when several hundred Bohemian Waxwings had provided a
similar stage for a frenzied/neurotic Townsend’s Solitaire; I had no idea
that a solitaire was capable of all that cussing!

So many birding tales to tell… =)

Larry in west Boise, where it’s been surprisingly birdie at our feeders and
along our nearest stretch of Greenbelt, noting that Tom McCabe is finding a
more interesting mix of raptors along his usual stretch of Greenbelt just
east of us, eh?

There haven’t been many birds around for awhile, but this morning, a large
flock of Pine Siskins, American Goldfinches, and Dark-eyed Juncos descended
on my yard.

The predominant species was the one I would least expect – Pine siskins. I
counted over 30! I don’t believe I have ever seen that large of a siskin
flock in my lifetime.

Winter is coming. we still have snow on the ground up here in Horseshoe
Bend. Happy Holidays everyone! Jonathan Barnett

RE: [IBLE] Digest Number 6097

Thx Peggy! Guessing Mike had already corrected it to RNSA by the time you checked eBird? If I try to enter a sapsucker of any sp hereabouts at this time of year, it’s not on the list of expected sp, IOW it’s a write-in that needs verifying, so I can understand how a misnomer might be entered. If I look at the bar charts for Ada County, however, I see one accepted entry for YBSA at IBO Lucky Peak in 2001 (IOW, it’s still “rare” at any time of year), whereas RNSA appears to be trending less and less rare here as an over-wintering sp. This trend has happened just recently, i.e., mostly since we moved here five yrs ago. Coincidentally, we had been experiencing a similar “recent” trend in W Colorado during our 15 yrs there, most often found during CBC efforts.

If you click on the “Checklist” for this eBird listing, it lists the bird as a Red-naped Sapsucker. His comment says he was looking for a yellow-bellied Sapsucker. I don’t understand why eBird sent an alert about a Yellow-bellied???

Birders,
How is this a “continued sighting?” Are there other photos and discussion on Facebook? Has RNSA or a hybrid been discussed and ruled out?
Sincere thanks! =)

[IBLE] magpie offerings

G’morning birders,

We’ve tried just about everything to prevent window strikes by our feeder
birds, but when an accipiter storms the back yard, the smallish frenzied
birds go every which way, slamming into each other and into windows. I’d
say that 80% of them recover and soon toodle off to one of our brush piles
or other dense cover. Yesterday’s casualty was a siskin that didn’t
recover, so I parked it on the magpie peanut tray. It was soon recycled by
one of our 25 magpies.

Our typical daily count from our yard (Big Sit! idea) has been about 20 sp,
in part because we have a duck pond across the street and mature cottonwoods
in view from our back yard that offer good views for raptors. GH Owls are
counter-calling as I write this…

Toppermost birding all y’all,

Larry

Re: [IBLE] Digest Number 6097

If you click on the “Checklist” for this eBird listing, it lists the bird
as a Red-naped Sapsucker. His comment says he was looking for a
yellow-bellied Sapsucker. I don’t understand why eBird sent an alert about
a Yellow-bellied???
