The 66th Nampa Christmas Bird Count day is coming to an end. Approximately 40 people participated in the count. And what a windy day it was, 15-23 mph winds all day. The count day total is 98 species and 5 additional count week birds (count week ends 12/24). The best bird of the day was found at Canyon Hill Cemetery, a Nashville Warbler.

Thanks to suggestions from R.L and Steve D, my son found it this a.m. roosting low in a tangle. We walked left along the road behind the maint buildings til he found the owl. Another birder got a nice photo. Cheers, Judy Meredith. jmeredit@…
Just a fun note that on our way to Portland, OR we were struck by the high numbers of hawks and falcons we saw from I-84 west of Exit 55. We sometimes saw 4 in 1/4 mile. Open agriculture habitat and early afternoon. Fun!
For anyone looking, the brant was feeding in Veteran’s Memorial Park, with a large flock of Canada geese, very close to State Street, this am (10:30). Pretty fair snow storm at the time.
Day one of count week is off to a good start. A Least Sandpiper is in the lower dam canal outlet at Deer Flat NWR. Hopefully the forecasted snow doesn’t send it flying south before Saturday.
Today starts the count week for the Nampa CBC, 12/18 through 12/24. Bird species not seen on count day, Saturday12/21, can be added to the CBC list.
Rules for the count –
1. the birds must be in the count circle, Caldwell and Nampa and areas in between; north to the Boise River, south to Missouri and Farner, west to the Snake River and east to Garrity in Nampa.
2. count species only, no need to count individual birds
If you are out birding in the count area before Saturday and see any ‘good’ birds please let Cheryl or I know. On count day we can let the area counters know to look for them.
Feederwatchers: if you would like to participate in the count by counting birds at your feeders please get in touch with Cheryl or me. Include your your location so we don’t double count.
