It was a 3 raptor treat on Christmas Eve afternoon on the Boise Depot
Bench. My neighbor and I were in the driveway discussing snow removal and a
lower number of squirrels lately. Soon we noticed wingbeats and saw a
Cooper’s Hawk overhead. A second one moved from one cedar tree to another
starting a series of loud screams. The first hawk had flown away. The sound
and actions of the one in the trees prompted me to think it was trying to
scold an owl. Sure enough, my neighbor and I walked down his driveway and
spotted a light colored Great Horned Owl perched in a pine. Mark has found
several pellets on top of his garage roof, a squirrel leg bone on the
driveway, and now the owl. We’re wondering if it is the same owl with one
good eye that hunted squirrels in their yard last winter. I’ll be on owl
watch.

I’ve heard from a couple of you that you’ve received an e-mail from me today. Don’t open it or click on the link!
If it doesn’t have to do with birding then it’s not from me. I’ve been hacked before and have received many such strange e-mails from several of you. I just delete them and notify the person. Just remember to change your passwords frequently. This seems to be a common occurrence with yahoo mail.

The 2017 LC Valley CBC was conducted on Sunday, December 17th. Twenty-five
birders (10 teams and 6 feeder watchers) documented 93 bird species in the
count circle. Participants cumulatively spent 56.5 hours, drove 217 miles
and hiked 22.2 miles in pursuit of birds. Although the general impression
of count participants was that overall numbers of birds were lower than in
most years, we had some interesting finds. Highlights include Lesser
Black-backed Gulls, an American Dipper, a Snow Bunting, Gray-crowned Rosy
Finches, and Common Redpolls. The Palm Warbler discovered at Mann Lake in
November was also found on count day. The snow storm preceding the count
apparently pushed many Horned Larks in to the area, with 920 birds being
counted. Count week birds were sparse this year with only Common Loon and
Thayer’s Gull being reported (let me know if I’m missing anything).

Despite several inches of fresh snow, I had a prolonged and very satisfying
encounter with the continuing Mann Lake PALM WARBLER late this morning. It
was way up beyond the model airplane area (circling the lake
counter-clockwise), almost to the upper end. In this area are 2 large
stands of cottonwoods, and between the stands is a bit of an opening in the
willows and other dense vegetation. The bird was up in there, near and in
a stand of what I think are white poplar/silver maple. I saw no
yellow-rumps, but the palm was near but not directly foraging with a small
flock of Golden-crowned Kinglets and a Bewick’s Wren. I did not detect any
of the other rarities present earlier this month, but a nice AMERICAN TREE
SPARROW made an appearance. The lake was up to 80% open, but there weren’t
a ton of water birds present.

The Nampa CBC had a cold, snowy start but ended under sunny skies. Cheryl and I want to thank everyone who participated; we couldn’t do it without you.

The people who supplied food are heroes; what could be better than a bowl of chili or soup, buttered bread and holiday desserts after a cold day of counting birds. Thank you.

The unofficial count day total is 105 birds. There is one gull species that still needs to be confirmed which could put the count at 106. There is also 1 species for count week.

Highlights include 5 blue jays in one place, Swamp Sparrow, Dunlin, Least Sandpipers, Greater Yellowlegs, Lesser Goldfinch.

There were a few surprise misses: Double crested Cormorant, Black-crowned Night Heron, and Orange-crowned Warbler.
