A group of Killdeer . I have seen then for the last 4 years .

IBRC, IBLE, historians, eBirders, other birders, non-listers, et al.,

I haven’t surfed on the IBRC web site to determine whether this kind of information is included therein, but it seems to me there should be inclusion of “historical perspective” like this, re: DATA!! showing how far we’ve come in documenting the occurrence of birds in Idaho (eBird is now showing that 433 species have occurred in the state).

Attached is one of Chuck Trost’s state year lists, this one for 1993, that he kindly gave me permission to copy and share. And maybe there are older checklists out there somewhere in someone’s library or on their computer that might also be of interest to us ?

Until fall migration ramps up, my mind is wandering beyond our backyard bird feeders…. eh?

Hi all – remember the post below? Well, this tour has been converted from a Rockjumper tour to a private tour by the guide in connection with Itororo Lodge. It will mirror what was planned by Rockjumper originally. The cool thing is… if 2 more people register to room together, the price per individual will go down to GBP 1650 (approx. $2,042.70), and if only 4 more people register (2 per room), the price goes massively down to only GBP1230 (approx. $1,522.74 !) I challenge anyone to find a birding tour outside the US for a week, with a professional seasoned guide, for that little amount of money!!

I am not affiliated with this tour, outside of the fact that I have already registered to go myself. There are 4 people signed up at this point. The maximum for the tour is 8. Brazil lifted their Visa requirements in June of this year, so only a passport is needed. This is one of the best areas of South America, with over 400 species possible, of which a whopping 80 of them are endemic to this one area of forest!!

Rufous Hummingbirds are still hitting the feeder, more females than males now. And, the Black-chinned juveniles started showing yesterday. Filling my feeder every 2 days now. Had one female Broad-tailed appear yest a couple of times.

Happy Anniversary sbcobirders! I had a message pop up today reminding me that 20 years ago this very day this group was created. I think I owe thanks to Mike Stiles of slocobirding who at the time had an active listserve through Cal Poly in SLO, and I remember asking Mike if I could post messages about Santa Maria area birds to the group and he said (politely), “I think I would rather keep this group focused on SLO county birds.” BAM! sbcobirding was born. In those early days it was hosted through eGroups, eventually swallowed up by Yahoo, later ignored by Yahoo so we moved to Groups.io. In all that time the number of subscribers has grown. I think there were only a few county groups way back when but eventually nearly all 58 counties in California had a discussion group or regional group that birders could report birds to. It was a sign of the times. The phone-in BirdBox was starting to disappear and email discussion groups were a means to get information out to a wide audience fairly quickly. While eBird has taken over the way birders obtain information today it does not support real discussion. This is why I feel email groups still serve a purpose. A group like this is only as good as its members and the topics being discussed so thanks go to all of you for your participation all these years, sharing your sightings and generating some really meaningful discussion about birding in this wonderful county.

wish we could have back the trumpet vine we had in Albuquerque, covering the back of our house =)

meanwhile,

hummer activity here in W Boise is in crescendo, just Black-chins so far, but we know others are coming

we saw 100s of hums of 4 sp this morning near Twin Falls…… toppermost place in Idaho…. we counted 45 humfeeders of significant size, not unlike ROUS’s (rodents of unusual size, Princess Bride)
our estimate was 70% BC, 15% BT, 10% RU, 5% CA, males of all but RU

Headed down to the Snake for a bit of fly-fishing. I didn’t have any takes but watched an Osprey hit mid-stream about 100 yds below me & then leave the water, flying right by me with an 18″ brown trout in its talons. Good to see some luck was happening.

Back at the house, refilled the nectar feeder & within 5 minutes of setting it back out had a female Rufous & a female Black-chinned taking turns at it. Didn’t see any male Rufous today, but had one come in yesterday AM. Thanks for all the responses. Appears fall Rufous migration is underway.
