An adult Little Stint, presumably one of last winter’s two birds, has returned to the salt works on Friday the 2nd. They are dropping the saltworks pond that is half a mile east of 13th Street, and the bird is frequenting the first, southwest corner of that pond. It has molted out of breeding plumage quite a bit but still has a faint orange cast to the rear of the head and nape area and a few of the black feathers with broad rusty edges on the lower scapulars and tertials remain as well. It still has fine dark spotting on the sides of the upper breast but otherwise the underparts are totally clean white, and of course it has a notably short and fine-tipped bill, and a faint split supercilium. Otherwise, I cannot find any rare shorebirds on this pond despite the large numbers of birds present, including plenty of juvenile Western sandpipers.

The stint remained for an hour and a half in the same area and presumably is still there when we left, although the water level will be substantially lower tomorrow as the pond further drops, and so the bird could easily move to another area. No guarantees, although certainly it isn’t going anywhere given it’s presumably a returning wintering bird.

I stopped by Mountain Home reservoir on my way home today. Shorebird numbers were so-so but the number of species increased from the last time I stopped there.

Avocets, LB dowitcher, greater yellowlegs, Wilson’s and red-necked phalaropes, killdeer, and Least, Western, semipalmated, sported and Bairds Sandpipers.

Ken, I had planned to wait until Saturday. But I woke up at 3 am and couldn’t sleep so I headed out just after 4 am. Saw the bird and then headed back to Caldwell and work. ?

Missy and i did the same thing… we were planning on going today with an early start, but…… there’s always a Plan B

yesterday – Thursday – we had been birding locally around Boise since 0600 hrs, and that was pretty much our all-day mission, but when a location description was revealed on IBLE by Austin after a plea on IBLE by Denise, we changed course and headed for the hills… the Albion Mountains, Pomerelle Ski Area, and Lake Cleveland, where a storm blew in as we were departing, lowering the temperature to 48F , which felt miraculous for the 1st of August….

speaking of PUMA, we saw the male at its nest cavity in early afternoon, but we had already encountered Puma the mammal early yesterday on our way to Idaho City…

so it was a PUMA / Puma day for us in S Idaho !! =)

All birders interested in the PUMA,

I was unable to post details last night but the nest cavity is on the west
side of the lake in the northern group of snags that spit out into the
water. Although, the pair can be observed flying around the lake. Super
easy to get a good scope view on the cavity as the adults come in and out
carrying food.

Will the birders who saw the Purple Martins please give some additional information as to where they saw the birds. I’ve never been to Lake Cleveland and don’t know where to start looking. Which side of the lake, where was the nest seen, etc? Thanks, any information will be very much appreciated.
