It was quite cold with a skiff of snow on our lawn when I set out today. As
usual, I glanced at the large tree at 19th and Eastman and was rewarded with
a Merlin as bird #4. Things were quiet at Esther Simplot Park, but I was
able to find Gadwalls, A. Wigeons, and C. Mergansers. But Veterans Pond
produced L. Scaup, RN Ducks, a ton of C. Mergansers, and a PB Grebe. That
made my total 20.

My second raptor of the day was a GH Owl that has a well-disguised hangout
that I happened to find one day (going slow on a bike has its benefits).
Then I found a little “cloud” of BC Chickadees, Brown Creepers, RC Kinglets
and RB Nuthatches. By now I was over 30 birds and cautiously optimistic.

My optimism was rewarded at Les Bois track with a pair of RT Hawks, and the
pond had more RN Ducks than I’ve seen there in some time, plus Buffleheads
(and hordes of C. Geese of course).

As I headed back to the river from Remington St., I saw a large bird flying
upriver and got binos on him quickly enough to identify a Bald Eagle-always
a treat. The ride home along the river produced a small flock of C.
Goldeneye, a Cooper’s Hawk, and an A. Kestrel (six raptors is a great day!).
Other birds of note were a foraging Bewick’s Wren and a calling Pacific
Wren, plus several GB Herons.

My final tally was 42 birds in 11 miles. Not bad for an old fart.

thought I had 5 gadwalls in one group looking at photo one was wigeon next
to the gadwall 2 more gadwalls further along dam 3 common mergansers

With that eyebrow and the colors it is a Nothern Goshawk adult

hmmm, but now with your note I wonder how certain I was about my ID, Coop vs. Gos ??? and there’s a bit more to this story…

at SABO in SEAZ (Sheri Williamson’s place) we saw a Coop try to lift off the ground with a roadrunner that was in its grasp, didn’t succeed so left the roadrunner behind but with half of it’s face torn off (and presumably consumed)
soon thereafter in CO I saw a Coop carrying a magpie, nearby, as in right past me !!
extrapolating, but without taking note of the gender of either Coop (which would also be of interest, and of importance), the lift or”carrying capacity” of Coop was somewhere between 13 oz (roadrunner) and 6 oz (magpie)…. using Sibley’s generic notations on weights

copying Trost, but copying IBLE will be your call =)

BTW, Solitaires are scarce in our immediate area of west Boise……

Thanks Larry. So, I just did a “Test” post to IBLE & received statement that it went thru. But, hasn’t yet appeared. Also, am finding that starting yest IBLE is very sluggish in loading. Yahoo itself loads quickly as do my other websites & apps. But not IBLE.

To share with you, over past wk, have found 3 different piles of magpie feathers with tail feathers in one neat pile & body feathers in another, just inches away. I rarely find evidence of magpies as prey, let alone 3 in one wk. Believe I found the culprit yest, an adult N Goshawk.

Over the yrs, one usually appears approx every 3rd winter & sticks around for about a month. They do tend to go after larger birds from Eurasian Collared Doves to RN Pheasants. As well, have a good number of Townsend’s Solitaires about.

Have you had any recent trouble posting to IBLE? Reason I ask, since yest I’ve tried to post a N Goshawk sighting, but whenever I hit “Send”, receive a statement “Could Not Send Message”.

Tried 3 times yest & again this AM & get same msg. I can read reports &, assume, can respond to them. But cannot post my own. You can certainly pass this msg on to List Owners, as well. Wondering if this is part of the phase-out of Yahoo Groups?
