We, too, have lost our nighthawk population in eastern Emmett. What were 50 in the evening skies of summer is now 1. They used to sleep during the day in our vineyard rows! The problem must have commenced when West Nile arrived and mosquito abatement districts sprang up. Even with our no spray designation, the nighttime insect life is quiet. Our western kingbird and says phoebe numbers stay steady, maybe even larger than 20 years ago, but they are mostly daytime feeders.
Someone else mentioned more Bewicks wrens, which we’ve seen, along with extra YB chats. And I can’t walk 20 ft without seeing a Eurasian collared dove… crikey.

Common Nighthawk
When we first moved to Boise in 1978, you could go out on any summer evening and hear numerous C. Nighthawks. Sadly, that is no longer the case. But yesterday I heard my FOY CONI, and this evening, as I was opening a window to put in the fan, I heard one again. I’m sure they are more common where we don’t try to kill every mosquito, etc., but I have to admit I got a little jolt of pleasure hearing them last night and tonight (around 10:20). I hope I get to hear them all summer, and not just to boost my daily list. 😉

I hide (from eBird public display) all of my observations / reports of them
because again this morning a Happy Snapper was standing below one of the nest sites, and perennial questions I have include –
who are these folks? they don’t appear to be birders per se
why do they have huge/long lenses and still They Stand Right Below The Nest ??
and why oh why are they there for prolonged periods, 30-45 min plus ? (I pass them twice, going out and back along my usual route)
earlier in the year it was a nesting Great Horned Owl that was treated to a never-ending audience

Weather showed less chance rain between 1&6 so i ventured out glad i did saw lots of birds yellow warb several. 2 comm yellow throats willow& hamm fly cats e.&w king birds blk hd.grosbeaks –chat n.flick rough wing &tree swallow osprey snipe cal quail both doves gr.blue heron vir rail he stopped to drink rain water in road for photo thanks liz about north of tracks on park rd.
