Bobwhite Quail. A lot are raised for quail eggs, food and training bird dogs in the Treasure Valley.

Lynda, I was at Ester Simplot Water Park. Park in the lot closest to the river by the restrooms. Walk down the path going west to Veteran’s Pond, the closest pond to the river. There were two there as late as 3:00 when Tom saw them (message below).

Kids bought me a camera for Christmas that can finally take photos, which actually turn out & is so simple, even I can use it, lol! Took this photo the other day of a backyard visitor. A wild turkey tom’s iridescence of bronzes & greens is always striking! Brian Carrigan/Blackfoot
My obsession with birding from the back of a bike resulted in finding 42 species on a 12-mile ride today. Highlights included lots of different ducks at the various greenbelt ponds, 4 different species of swallows, my first C. Quail in
ages, and a pair of Wild Turkeys at the junction where the ditch that runs along Veterans meets up with Crane Creek. Also. the Common Loon at Veterans persists, although I only (sadly) saw one.
My birding day got even better when we walked out for our evening walk and immediately heard a WS Owl. Later, on 20th St., we saw one swooping down onto a lawn and then rising up to feed a demanding youngster perched in a tree.
What a great way to end the day.
We begin our annual watch for the loons here in Gem County in late winter. Their arrival excites this former MN household as well. There were six tonight, on HWY 52 between Black Canyon Park and Triangle Park, visible from the Longhollow Creek pullover. And I believe there were sightings last week at Sawyer’s pond and Dick Knox ponds. No vocalizations yet… that would be asking too much.
