Spring Arrivals

In the past 5 days, arrivals are: BH Grosbeaks competing with the Evening Grosbeaks at the platform feeder. Also: Lazuli Buntings, Cassin’s Finches, Pine Siskins, White-crowned & Chipping Sparrows & Red-naped Sapsucker. Flyovers of White-faced Ibis, White Pelicans, DC Cormorants, plus birds of prey. Sun, saw a total of 11 Bald Eagles (a pr is nesting nearby), RT & Swainson’s Hawks, Am Kestrel, Sharp-shinned Hawk & N Harrier. In the evenings GH, Saw-whet & W Screech Owls are all calling at various times.

Female Black-chinned Hummingbird arrived last week & a male, yest. He must have put in a long flight, as he hit the nectar feeder every 10 min from 4 pm until sundown. Did have a single female Broad-tailed come through Wed evening. Still waiting on W Tanager & any Warbler!

Lazuli Buntings

Lazulis arrive in force last week.  Our yard has much brush, cottonwoods and a creek and suddenly Lazulis are common. Hopefully some will nest here. The surprise was that 3 males ganged up on an oriole and pushed it away from the oriole feeder.  Lazulis ignored the  oranges but seem to really enjoy the grape jelly.  They go for the mixed millet seed, seem to ignore the sunflower seeds, and love grape jelly.

Re: Tio Lane – East Dike Road

Thank you for the heads up from everyone and for reporting it Cheryl. I have not been there for a couple of years but had been wanting to get over there. I  have an SUV where everything not in a small storage space is visible. My emergency bag, compressor/jump starter etc. let alone empty camera bags or spare gear. Will have to re think what I leave in the vehicle at public trail heads and which ones I even use. I have not used many the 18 months and they are far from major traffic areas when I do.

I reported the break-in incident at Deer Flat NWR Tio Lane parking lot (Nampa Idaho) to Refuge Law Enforcement. They are thinking of putting in a couple of surveillance cameras at that parking lot. Hopefully this was a one-time event but if it happens again, maybe the scum bags will be caught on camera. Meanwhile if you park there, as has been mentioned, don’t leave any valuables in sight. I parked there this morning but cleared my car of everything worth anything.

Amy & I were birding the East Dike trail yesterday afternoon.
When we got back to the parking lot we found our car had been broken into and Amy’s purse was stolen, and at least one other car was also broken into.
Just wanted to say, don’t leave any valuables in your vehicle if you’re planning a trip there, I know quite a few of you have been there recently.
The birding was pretty good, the highlight was a Green-tailed Towhee right at the far end of the wooded trail before you hit the river.
