this is a beautiful part of Colorado “far and away from the madding crowds” i.e., the hordes of people on the Front Range, e.g., Ft Collins – Denver – Colorado Springs – Pueblo

AND the birding can be special…. think higher elevation habitats that are nearby, including tundra

Dear Crane Supporter,

The 2019 Yampa Valley Crane Festival (August 29 – September 1) promises to be our best yet! Registration begins Monday, July 1 at 8 a.m. MDT . Many events for the four-day festival are free and do not require registration. Some events with limited space will require advance registration and a small fee. These events are noted in the schedule. Be sure to register early as we expect these events to fill quickly.

Registration is required for all guided crane viewing shuttles, birding by boat, most guided bird walks and the guided nature walk, some workshops, the HawkQuest live raptor photo shoot, the shuttles to the Carpenter Ranch and purchase of a picnic dinner at the Carpenter Ranch event.

Registration is not required for all speaker presentations, films, sketch-a-bird workshop, crane viewing on your own, HawkQuest live raptor booth, educational displays, crane yoga, crane story-telling, children activities on the Library Lawn, the hummingbird and hummingbird moth walk at Yampa River Botanic Park and the Carpenter Ranch Saturday night event (unless you wish to purchase a picnic dinner or take the shuttle).

I am working on updating my eBird records. Does anyone out there know when the Boise Christmas Bird Count dates were in 1981 thru 1993 and can send them to me? Or just reply to this message.

Pair of Black Headed Grosbeaks At feeder. Beautiful and hungry birds!

My friend Bob and I drove the road to pearl this morning from Mike’s place
to pearl about 3 miles we heard a min.of 15 +chats protecting nest area.
Drive out after noon still very vocal did get some photos. about 4 miles
from highway 16 saw and photoed swainsons hawk

We found a mockingbird on Mud Flat Road today, near Grand View. It had quite the song, Robin, Curlew, Flicker, says phoebe, nighthawk and several other bird songs were part of its song.

With reports to my East & SW, I keep watching but no Rufous Hummingbirds my way, as of yet. Still getting Black-chinned & watched a male doing a display flight to a female for 30 minutes on Thu evening. Like Susan reported, the Black-headed Grosbeaks & Bullock’s Orioles are hitting their respective feeders hard. Going through 4-5# black oil sunflower seed a day & a jar of grape jelly every 5 days.

Have seen fledglings of House Wren, House Finch & Am Robin. Did have a Dusky Flycatcher calling yesterday AM. And there’s at least a pr or 2 of Lazuli Buntings nesting on the place. Western Wood Pewees are here & saw a W Kingbird mid-week. Yellow Warblers are numerous this “summer”. No snow at our river elevation but frost yesterday & today. As we’re on our 3rd starts of tomatoes, 2nd of peppers & 2nd of wife’s ornamental flowers…if they got bit too badly, we give up for this season! I have one set of tomato plants that have been in a state of suspended animation for 3 wks now…just sitting there, not dead but not growing. Maybe I could sell to NASA!
