Howdy,
This afternoon I drove around AFR on a clear, cool afternoon. The reservoir is refilling, and Aberdeen’s Big Hole never emptied. At the corner of Strang and Yuma Roads there were seven Am. Avocets and about sixty L.-billed Dowitchers. At Danielson mudflats (Springfield effluent) there were two Am. Avocets. Yesterday near the silo there were 2 Killdeer and 2 Pectoral Sandpipers. A pair of Parasitic Jaegers were chasing gulls, and each other for a fish a gull dropped.

This morning Kirsten Dahl and I did an early Moscow North Raptor Run.

Results:

Red-tailed Hawk – 12
American Kestrel – 4
Northern Harrier – 1 female

Other Birds of note:

NORTHERN SHRIKE – south of Potlatch ID
Mountain Bluebirds – 2 along Darby road north of Moscow
Belted Kingfisher male at Spring Valley Res.

Ditto, This AM 1st, dark eyed junco’s arrived in Nampa, no red breasted nut hatches yet, flickers arrived 7-10 days ago.

Here in west Boise, our lingering BC hummer finally departed (ten days ago), as have our Ospreys. FOS duckage, RC Kinglets, WC sparrows, and juncos are on the rise in our hood.

Missy and our daughter Katey are finally home from Paris, and I’ve returned from a Fall Color Drive through Stanley, Sunny Valley, Ketchum, Hailey and Bellevue, like wowzers!!! B est birds included Canada Jays near Stanley and one each RN Grebe and Surf Scoter on Redfish Lake. The Sawtooths and White Clouds were my favorite backpacking areas during college years, eh? =)
Moments ago I put one of my Colorado birding buds on the plane homeward.

Compared to past fall migrations, the one word that would describe this year’s is…sparse. In fact, for my immediate area, disturbingly so. Will see what next year brings.

As I missed about 10 days from the area, was hoping I had just been absent for the main push. But, a fellow birder, who lives a couple miles from me, also in Snake River Riparian habitat, noted the same decrease in fall migrant numbers this season.

Today I found Scoters in a number of locations. I found a juvenile Surf Scoter on Gem Lake below Idaho Falls and on American Falls reservoir North of the Silo. I also had a Pacific Loon there. At the pipeline boat ramp below the American Falls dam I found an adult male white-winged Scoter and three juvenile surf scoters. There were also 5 Wood Ducks on the opposite shore.
