Re: Scarlet Tanager in Boise, KA Park

The image on e bird from the back of Ceredig Roberts camera shows the black wings on green body with yellow breast that would seem to be male. A number reported it as female but I saw several who saw it at a meeting tonight and they saw the black wings and green body also.

My wife and I were at Kathryn Albertson Park from about 9:45  to 11:30 this morning. While I was answering questions for a couple of people Magie saw it over our head in a tree but did not know what it was. She first said Western Kingbird but when I asked her about size and other kingbird ID field marks it was obvious that was not it and she noticed black on the wings when it flew away. I did not know it was there so never saw it.

Scarlet Tanager in Boise, KA Park

Since it hasn’t been reported here, yet; Faustina Peters found a SCARLET TANAGER at Kathryn Albertson Park in Boise, this afternoon, and it was subsequently refound by a number of other birders.  I don’t have much experience with these (especially in basic plumage) and how to sex them, but the bright greenish body and very dark blackish contrasting wings seem more suggestive of a male than a female.  Additional details and photos can be found on eBird.  This should become only the third accepted record for Idaho, pending review and acceptance by the IBRC.

Howe raptor count

Carolyn Bishop and I did the Howe winter raptor survey yesterday. Here are the results.

Red-tailed Hawk—18
American Kestrel—4
Northern Harrier—1
Rough-legged Hawk—72
Ferruginous Hawk—21
Unidentified buteo—10
Prairie Falcon—3

We were surprised and pleased at the number of Ferruginous Hawks.
