[IBLE] Notes from Cape Breton Island, part trois

Birders,

Missy and I birded SW Newfoundland for a few days and have some favorites to share:
Nesting endangered Piping Plovers
Resident Black-headed Gulls, lifer for me, but not for Missy, eh??
Yellow-bellied Flycatchers, very colorful, thick as warblers in a healthy fallout =)
Warblers of 20 species, plus a few we didn’t identify
Our favorite eBird hot spots were Codroy River Valley and Stephenville Crossing, yeehah!!

oh, and brrrrrrr!!!

Re: [IBLE] via Facebook this AM – Black-throated Green Warbler at 3 Island Crossing State Park photographed yesterday

I’ll add that in the photo the bird appeared to be singing. Although the park is somewhat big, the song would be pretty distinct, making it not impossible to track down.

Rl Rowland just called me with a refinding of the Northern Parula at Blacks Creek. NE side in the willows.

I just heard from Steve Dougill that he’s found a Northern Parula in the willows at Blacks Creek – likely a female. He said it was calling a decent amount but not singing. They entered from the parking area on the E side of the reserve and walked in along the N edge of the willows – the bird was mostly about 50 yards from the western edge of the willows.

Good luck to anyone who seeks it (& keep in mind its supposed to get breezy later 🙂

Birders, a few days ago Missy and I hiked out to the Northern Gannet colony on Isla Bonaventure, located at E end of Gaspe Peninsula, Quebec. 200,000 nesting seabirds are here, about 75% of them are gannets… brief video here:

[IBLE] Great-tailed Grackle at Quinn’s Pond

I had to squeeze my ride in between appointments so I was moving rather
quickly today..UNTIL I heard some crazy sounds coming from the brush on the
peninsula between the pond outlet and the river. A woman passing by with her
dog asked what the crazy sounds were, and I admitted ignorance, but there
was something familiar as well. When Susan caught up with me, she spotted
movement in the Russian Olive on the end of the peninsula. Finally I saw the
tell-tale long tail and I remembered where I’d heard the sounds before:
Great-tailed Grackle. This may be the first time I’ve seen one in Idaho,
definitely a first for Boise.

We watched the bird for a short time and then continued our ride. On the way
back we didn’t hear any strange sounds and could not locate the bird again.
But what a treat while it lasted. Which is what I love about birding-you
never know what’s going to show up.
