On the Garden City greenbelt, between 50th and 51st, I noticed a bunch of
crows complaining about something. When I stopped, I noticed a bird that was
obviously not a crow. Binos revealed an absolutely gorgeous Peregrine
Falcon. He was sitting on a branch a short distance from the crows,
seemingly unconcerned. He was turned slightly towards me, with sunshine
lighting up his features. He was creamy colored on the front and his dark
face pattern was in stark contrast. This is my first in quite some time.

Fortunately, Larry and Missy Arnold were in the area and they got to see him
also. Our bonus was a Pacific Wren, my FOS, calling from the brush.

P.S. I’ve been advised that some folks are reporting a Ross’s Goose from
Esther Simplot. I think they are confused by the fact that the Snow Goose
that is present is smaller than the Canada Geese it hangs out with. But it
is quite a bit larger than the Mallards in the vicinity, and Ross’s is much
closer in size to Mallard than to Canada (see Sibley’s measurements) . Today
the bird was conveniently walking around on the grass next to Whitewater
Park Blvd., and it definitely has the bill of a Snow, and not the stubby
bill of a Ross’s. It is definitely an immature, with lots of gray on its
back and neck, and its bill is almost completely black, but I don’t think
there’s any way it’s a Ross’s.

Denise and I scoped the water around Gridley Bridge and up to Whooper Flats this afternoon. One BLSC and no LTDU.

This morning I looked out the window for some calling chickadees (wondering if they might be scolding an owl in the juniper or ??) and was surprised to notice a MacGillvray’s Warbler working the small shrubs right next to my street.  It was finding some insects so it stayed long enough for me to get a poor digi-binocular pic 🙂

Today, at Esther Simplot Park, we had a flyover by an Osprey. He didn’t hang
around, just flew by heading generally toward downtown (?). He was low
enough that binos were unnecessary.

Today was also another 5 raptor day: Osprey (ESP), Merlin ( 1 at ESP/ 1 at
52d St.), RT Hawk(Les Bois race track), Cooper’s Hawk (Lander St.) and
Sharp-shinned Hawk (19th & Eastman). There was another accipiter on the GC
side of the river by ESP, but he was an immature high up in a tree and he
could have been either a small Cooper’s or a large Sharp-shinned.

Final tally was 37 birds in 14 miles, but I’m hoping the Great Horned Owl
comes to visit again.

There are 2 Black Scoters near the island below the bridge. The long-tailed Duck is upstream near north edge diving a lot.

This morning I looked out the window for some calling chickadees (wondering if they might be scolding an owl in the juniper or ??) and was surprised to notice a MacGillvray’s Warbler working the small shrubs right next to my street.  It was finding some insects so it stayed long enough for me to get a poor digi-binocular pic 🙂
Here’s to hoping it migrates … or survives all winter and shows up on our Christmas Bird Count!

While biking back from Remington St., after the rain had slacked off, I saw
something large in the river near 51 St. Binoculars revealed a mature Bald
Eagle standing out in the middle of the river near a gravel bar. As I
watched, he tried to take off several times, without success. I began to be
concerned that he was stuck to something in the water, until I finally
realized it was a fish too large for him to carry off. He was like a man
with one leg stuck in a bucket and he was trying to walk to the gravel bar.
It wasn’t clear if the fish was still alive, but the part he pulled out of
the water looked pretty big (I couldn’t help but think of the guy who just
the other day caught a 19 pound trout in the Boise River).

Eventually he gave up and let go of the fish. I watched to see if the fish
would float to where he could get at it again, but the fish disappeared and
the eagle took off. Very entertaining for me but disappointing for the bird.

The greenbelt was pretty much deserted, especially early on when the rain
was heaviest. But the birds were active and at Quinn’s Pond I found my first
Herring Gull in several years. I’ve seen reports of them in the area, but I
haven’t been that lucky-until today. Whereas all summer long the gulls at
Quinn’s are almost exclusively Ring-billed Gulls, lately there’s been an
influx of California Gulls. The Herring Gull was near a California Gull and
they were both on the shore, so size comparison was pretty obvious.

After I got home and dried out, Susan called me outside to see a Merlin that
had just zoomed by our feeders. He perched for a few minutes and then took
off. And later, near dark, as I was going through the gazillion emails I get
every day, I heard a Great Horned Owl. Susan heard it too, and we both ran
outside. He was in the top of a tree at 19th and Eastman, hooting to the
world. It was still light enough that I could even see his “horns” through
binos. He then took off heading east. Way cool.

That brought my day list to 37 birds (including 5 raptors) in 15 miles.
Another great day.
