If you are interested in helping please contact him at 435-245-4177 or 435-245-5261, I'm sure he would be happy to have some help from Idaho birders. Bear Lake is in the far southeastern corner of Idaho and the closest town of any size is Montpelier. It would be interesting to find out what is in this corner of Idaho in the winter.

Sarah Harris: 208-734-2645 or sjharris@cableone.net

Saturday December 19, 2009
Plan to join fellow birders for a day of fun and some of the best winter birding in Idaho! The Hagerman Valley Idaho Count will begin at 8:00 AM (unless your group is owling) at the Highway #30 Rest Area just west of the WMA. We will undoubtedly see 80 to 90 species, a rarity or two, and thousands of individual birds (mostly waterfowl). Our count circle includes a 15 mile stretch of the Snake River, portions of Billingsley Cr., Riley Cr., Sand Springs, Ritter Island, Hagerman Fossil Beds, and the Hagerman Wildlife Management Area. The weather will be cold, windy, and possibly snowy. Warm food and drinks will await you at the compilation, to be held in Hagerman. Contact Sarah Harris for your count area assignment by phone (208)734-2645 or email (

The Idaho Falls Christmas Bird Count (CBC) will be held on Saturday, December 19. The count area is a 15 mile diameter circle centered near the Idaho Falls airport.

We need birders in the field and people to keep track of the birds that come to their feeders. Birds seen during count week, the three days before and after count day, are also reported. If you would like to participate but can’t come to the planning meeting, please contact Mark Delwiche at 525-9414 or delwiche@srv.net. There will be a $5 per person participation fee to partially offset National Audubon’s costs.

I hope you can participate—either in the field or at home watching your feeders!

The Christmas Bird Count is a fun day for both the birding enthusiast and the novice alike. Held between December 14 and January 5 each year, the CBC is an opportunity to see wintering birds rarely seen by most people. All count data is incorporated into a national database. This will be the 109th annual Christmas Bird Count and the Palouse Audubon Chapter's 38th year of participation. The count is being coordinated by Dave Holick and Tom Weber. Everyone is welcome to participate. Please contact
Dave (daveholick@moscow.com) or Tom (tweber@wsu.edu) for details.

Saturday, December 19, 2009
Meet: 7 AM for all day trip
Meeting Location: Deer Flat Wildlife Refuge Headquarters, Nampa, ID
Cost: $5.00
The Nampa Area Christmas Bird Count will be held December 19.  We will meet at the Deer Flat Wildlife Refuge Headquarters at 7:00 to 7:45 am for instructions and area assignments.  We would like to extend an invitation to any birders who might be in the Nampa Area or want to travel to our area to join us.  Dress warm and bring a lunch.  The groups of counters will meet back at the refuge headquarters at 5:00 pm for collection of data.  We will furnish soup/chili/hot bread dinner for all counters who wish to stay while we talk about the day's sightings.

If you are planning on participating in the Nampa Christmas Bird Count, please be aware that the Upper Embankment dam road will be closed to all vehicles in early December.  Currently the new road is under construction and should be completed very soon.  I think they plan to stripe the new road this next week.  The new entrance to the refuge visitor center is farther west, located at Indiana and Roosevelt.  From Hwy 55, go past Lake Avenue towards Caldwell.  Turn left on Indiana.  Follow Indiana to the refuge entrance.

From Iowa Street, drive past the old entrance to the upper dam.  Follow the road as it parallels the dam before turning away from the dam.  The first road you will come to is Roosevelt.  Turn left on Roosevelt and continue to Indiana.  Turn left into the refuge.
